Mater-Bi- Biodegradable and Compostable Plastic

Mater-Bi: the biodegradable and compostable plastic produced by Novamont in Italy

Novamont Group (Italy) is world leader in the development and production of biodegradable and compostable plastic polymers and biochemicals through the integration of chemistry, environment and agriculture.

Since 1994, Plastral has exclusively distributed Mater-Bi biopolymers in Australia and New Zealand.

In over twenty-five years of research and innovation, Novamont has developed the Mater-Bi innovative family of biodegradable and compostable plastic, based on renewable raw materials and obtained by means of proprietary technologies in the field of starches, cellulose, vegetable oils and their combinations, which currently counts on a portfolio of approximately 1,000 patents.

Mater-Bi biodegradable and compostable plastic materials are able to provide solutions for specific environmental issues while combining product quality and performance with an efficient use of resources.

Mater-Bi’s biodegradability and compostability properties make it particularly suitable for applications with little probability of recycling, when recycling happens to be too expensive, or when plastics have a high probability of contaminating the natural environment or organic waste. If considered in connection with waste collection systems, it can allow optimal organic waste management, and contribute to the development of virtuous systems, transforming local issues into business opportunities with significant advantages throughout the entire production-consumption-disposal cycle.

Mater-Bi resin is suitable for processing by the most common conversion technologies: blowing, casting, extrusion/thermoforming and injection moulding machines for traditional plastics and is currently used for the production of several applications such as:

  • flexible packaging
  • waste bags
  • carrier bags
  • agricultural mulch film
  • food service ware products

Novamont promotes a bioeconomy model based not only on the efficient and sustainable use of renewable resources, but also as a factor for territorial regeneration. The company’s innovation strategy is based on the concept of biorefinery integrated in the local area, converting industrial sites that are decommissioned or are no longer competitive and maintaining the specific characteristics and biodiversity of the territories, in partnership with farmers and all the other stakeholders of the value chain.
